The classes turn from frustrating to fun, and they became one of the most profitable programmes in my school. On top of that, the kids actually improved faster.


The Key Ingredients To Success

Most martial arts instructors know, the key to a successful martial arts academy is keeping your students training long term. This will allow your students to develop rock solid skills, and it will help make your school profitable.

To keep students training long term, your classes need to be enjoyable, engaging, and develop their martial arts skills. A kids programme is NO different. If you’re missing any of these elements, you’re not going to keep kids training long term.

Thankfully, there is a simple way to achieve all of these things in every class you teach with very little extra effort. All you have to do is add VARIETY.

After all, variety is the spice of life. And by varying the drills and techniques you teach, the warm-ups, and even the equipment you use, keep your classes fresh and enjoyable for both you and your students.

And it was adding variety that revolutionised my kid's programme and made it what it is today.

To be clear, I don’t mean jumping from technique to technique during a class. What I mean is teaching the same technique or skill through a variety of different drills.


This is called DISGUISED REPETITION and, in my opinion, is the hallmark of a great instructor.

We all know the secret to getting good is practice. But practicing the same technique over and over is BORING, especially for children.

A great instructor, on the other hand, can get you to practice the same technique over and over without you realising it by continually changing drills.

There are two ways you can develop variety in your classes. Firstly, you can spend thousands of hours and thousands of pounds researching and developing different drills like I did, OR someone else does all the hard work for you and you just copy them.

Who am I?

But before we get into the Mittmaster Kids programme, who am I and why should you care?

My name is Matt Chapman aka Mittmaster Matt. I'm a lifelong martial artist, instructor, undefeated British MMA Champion, and run a successful school in the UK.

Hi, my name is Mittmaster Matt.

I'm a martial arts student, instructor, author and creator of the Mittmaster Pad Training system.

JKD & Kali Days

I first started pad training 20+ years ago when I started JKD training with my mentor Anton St James. He taught me all my fundamental skills in Kickboxing, Muay Thai & JKD.

I spent a decade training daily with Anton and he taught me more than anyone else, not just about martial arts but also about how to act as a person.

When I was in my mid 20's I moved to London to further my martial studies under Maestro Bob Breen at his infamous Hoxton Academy. The Academy was full of the best martial artists in the UK and I got molded by many kind yet dangerous people.

Bob also invited numerous high level martial artists to teach seminars including Marco Ruas, Dan Inosanto, Rick Young, and Erik Paulson.

Competing in MMA

Erik was the first person I'd met who could strike and grapple with equal skill and I decided to head out to LA to train with the former Shooto World Champion.

These trips were grueling, as we often trained three times a day, but great fun. Erik is the funniest person I've met. I went to LA several times over the following years and started fighting in professional MMA.

Erik taught me all my MMA skills and I retired undefeated three years later, thanks to his expert coaching.

Training in Thailand

Once my MMA career ended I traveled to Thailand to improve my Muay Thai under the coaches at Tiger Muay Thai. Back then Tiger only had two rings and not much else.

An amazing coach called Yod took me under his wing and he improved my Muay Thai massively. He is the only person I've ever sparred with and not been able to touch at all.

Ghost & Beyond

Back in the UK I started to look for new ways to train stand up striking and luckily met with Phil Norman just as he was creating his elusive striking style Ghost.

I was intrigued by the little I saw and traveled to Bournemouth to see what it was all about. Well he totally blew my mind. Ghost is like nothing else out there. It is truly unique and so well thought out.

I trained to become one of the first UK Ghost Instructors and have been training it ever since.

I would like to thank all my instructors Anton, Bob, Erik, Yod & Phil for being phenomenal martial artists and great coaches but also humble, joyous people. They have helped shape me from a scrawny kid into a man.

At least 90% of the Mittmaster system is down to their input and training.

I couldn't of done it without you gents. Thank you for everything.

Kids drills Month one

I'm working through month one of the kids drills and my son is loving it. Explanations from Matt, in the video, are easy to understand and well paced. The kid in the video is super enthusiastic which makes it fun to watch. Definitely will do month two and three too. Might be nice to have a belt or badge that can be given to kids who complete each month, perhaps requiring a video of the child submitted to Matt showing that they can perform each drill. Bring on month two and three :)
